The Jackie Robinson Story, Mann, Arthur
137 Mann, Arthur The Jackie Robinson Story
New York F.j. Low Company 1950 First Printing Digest Paper
The rare first edition of the movie tie in for "The Jackie Robinson Story." Filmed in 1950 with Robinson playing himself, the cast included a very young Ruby Dee as his wife. The film was directed by Alfred E. Green, the B movie director who had an A moment directing The Al Jolson Story, (this is ironic in itself as Jolson was noted for his black face routines), the screenplay was co-written by Mann. The film has a production design by the Oscar Winning production designer Boris Leven and an other Oscar winner Ernest Laslo did the cinematography. The digest size paperback is illustrted with scenes from the movie on the front cover, and photos of Robinson in sports action on the back cover. Nice portrait of Robinson with facsmile signature on the verso of the back cover. The front cover has an ink price of 5 cents (yeah right) and a ink date stamp, but both are not that glaring. Some minor creases to the back cover. The insides of this very fragile book are vg. with soft soft corner folds to a few pages, and some very light browning to the cheap paper used. Vg. Also included is a nice cloth copy (hardcover) in dustjacket of "Baseball Has Done It." This was published by J. B. Lippincott in 1964 and is a first edition. This is a collection of interviews with Robinson. The book has the owner signature of Bill Fitzgerald the sports writer who has also written I suppose "First Edition". Laid in the book is an official first day cover of the Jackie Robinson stamp from 1982. Fine/fine. Sold as a collection only.
