Porgy and Bess Theatrical & Movie Souvenir Programs , Gershwin,George & Heyward, Du Bose
61 Gershwin,George & Heyward, Du Bose Porgy and Bess Theatrical & Movie Souvenir Programs
New York 1942 Souvenir Programs Oversize Paper
Two very nice original souvenir programs from early productions of "Porgy and Bess". The first program is 20pgs. and is from the 1942 production that starred many of the original cast members from the 1935 production including Todd Duncan. This production had a healthy run of 286 performances at The Majestic Theatre. Illustrated throughout with many photos and bio. information + there is a terrific Hirschfeld drawing of the cast on the front cover. Covers loose, and a small scrape on the back cover which has a photo of Todd Duncan. The 2nd program is from the 1953 production which also had a good run of 305 performances. This is 30pgs. and the production starred Cab Calloway and a very young Leontyne Price at the beginning of her remarkable career. Illustrated with many photos + very nice colorful cover painting of the set by Wolfgang Roth. Also included is the large hardover souvenir program for the film version. This is a 34pg. souvernir program for Otto Preminger's version of the great Gershwin opera. The film version was not that well received in 1959, and it remains unseen on dvd. Illustrated with many photos in color. Attractive. Laid in is a postcard for a recent showing of the film which is illustrated with a photo of Sidney Poitier. Sold as a collection only.

70 Hammerstein II, Oscar Carmen Jones
New York Billy Rose 1943 Original Program Oversize Paper
Original 20pg. souvenir program from the 1943 production of Carmen Jones that was based on the opera by Bizet. This is a significant production because of the all black cast. The musical ran for 503 performances and appears to be from later in the run because of the critical blurbs that are printed in the program. The musical was later filmed by Otto Preminger with the great Dorothy Dandridge in the lead. The program is illustrated with photos and articles. There is also another large 20pg. souvenir program for a revial of the musical that was done at The New York City Center probably in the late 40's or early 50's. This program has some light damp staining. Also included is a vertical 36pg. oblong program from the 1991 London revival at The Old Vic that was directed by Simon Callow. Laid in is a foldover brochure for the production that announces Wilhelmenia Fernandez in the lead but she was replaced before the show opened. Sold as a collection only.
