Kleist's obscure and complex early 19th-century play, translated here by Joel Agee (James Agee's son) is a tragedy of love and war in which "An army of Amazons sets out to conquer Greek heroes for the purpose of stocking their women's state with new female offspring." Illustrated by Maurice Sendak in 13 full color drawings that are untypical for him. in that they are somewhat erotic. They are as usual with him richly detailed and beautifully colored. Small corner crease to the bottom of the back flap. Fine/near fine.
