New York New Directions 1947 First Edition Illus. Bds. W.dj.
The rare first edition of the great landmark play by one of America's great if not greatest playwrights. This is the true 1st with the pink boards and dustjacket with the same artwork by the noted designer Alvin Lustig. The boards are very clean and bright with a small chip to the bottom tip of the front board and some very light wear to the top and bottom of the spine. The dustjacket has some chipping along the top and bottom edges of the front and back panels and there is aoubt a 1 1/2" piece missing from the bottom of the spine panel and a smaller piece missing from the top edge of the spine panel. There is also some fading to the dustjacket. The insides of the book are fine and clean. Laid in is a playbill for the original production of the play with the original cast but a bit later on in the run. Also included is a large 20pg. souvenir program that was sold at the theatre. This is from later in the run with critical blurbs on the back cover but with the original cast including Brando. The program includes many photos & bio. material.  6. Williams, Tennessee  Baby Doll
Hollywood Warner Bros. 1956 1st Edition Pressbook
Very nice 24pg. pressbook for Elia Kazan's film "Baby Doll" that had a screenplay by Tennessee Williams. The film was met with tremdous controversy including a public comdenation from New York City's Cardinal Spellman. The film was favorably reviewed and received Oscar nominations for Carroll Baker & Mildred Dunnock's performances and William's screenplay. Memorable also for the great photo of Baker in a baby crib that covered a huge billboard in Times Square and is reproduced in the pressbook. The book also includes many ads, posters, publicity material and laid in is a two colored large herald that is illustrated with many stills including double page spread of the great photo of Baker in the crib. Tiny mended tear to the corner of the book and small spilt to fold, otherwise vg. A great Tennessee Williams item.

 16. Williams, Tennessee  The Fugitive Kind Poster and Suddenly Last Summer Lobby Card
Hollywood United Artists 1960 Poster Poster
An original folded half-sheet poster for the film adaptation of Tennessee Williams's play "Orpheus Descending." The film had a powerful cast that included Marlon Brando, Anna Magnani & Joanne Woodward but the film failed to connect with both audiences and critics alike. Printed in full color with nice large portraits of the cast. The film was directed by Sidney Lumet and from all accounts was a very difficult and troubled production. Fine. Also included is an 11" x 14" title card for "Suddenly Last Summer" which was filmed the year before with another powerful cast that included Elizabeth Taylor, Montgomery Clift and Katharine Hepburn. The film was directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz with a screenplay co written by Williams and Gore Vidal. This too was a troubled production and was also a box office and critical failure but did received Oscar nominations for the two lead actresses and for its exotic art direction. Probably the film is best remembered for the Liz Taylor's white bathing suit than for anything else. Some tack holes and minor staining to the borders. Vg. Sold as a collection only.
